Most lenses for glasses come with a lens enhancement to reduce reflections. This is known as an anti-reflection or reflection free coating which reduces glare from light sources such as mobile phones, sunlight, computer screens, etc.

You’ve just chosen your new corrective lenses and lens technology to correct your vision,  improve your visual comfort and support your eye health, but if your lenses are not always clean and clear you’ll be missing out on visual clarity and looking great.

There are numerous types of lens enhancements available for your lenses and it can become quite confusing what is available and why they are so important. Here's a quick guide to lens enhancements.

UV protection

Lens technologies such as Eye Protect System and Transitions can help protect your eyes from UV rays and lens enhancements can also improve the protection for your eyes to prevent the harmful effects. UV rays can contribute to premature ageing and eye conditions such as cataracts. All Crizal® UV lenses carry the E-SPF® index, which certifies daily UV protection of your eyes. The higher the E-SPF® index the greater the level of UV protection provided by the lens.

Blue-Violet light protection

Light plays an essential role in your everyday life, it is fundamental for your vision. It helps you perceive the surrounding world: shapes, detail, colours and your overall well-being by regulating sleep/wake cycles, mood, cognitive performances, etc, but light can also be the cause of premature eye aging. Whatever the weather, you are exposed to Blue-Violet light from the sun and to a lesser extent, Blue-Violet light is present indoors through modern low energy lighting. The amount of Blue-Violet light emitted from the low energy lighting, LED bulbs in particular, is a significantly lower volume than that emitted from natural sunlight. Crizal Prevencia selectively filters out Blue-Violet light, supporting retinal cell survival(1) and also preserves your overall well-being by allowing essential visible light to pass through.

Anti-reflection

Watching a movie, working on your computer or enjoying a sunset, we’re surrounded by light sources. These light sources create bothersome glare. Lens enhancements reduce glare improving your visual comfort and cosmetically they make your lenses superior, allowing your eyes  to be seen by others rather than glassy reflections. If you're bothered by glare when driving at night, Crizal Drive can reduce reflections by up to 90%. If you want lenses that are transparent, ask for Crizal Sapphire UV. Crizal Sapphire UV reduces reflections regardless of where the light comes from, resulting in superior lens aesthetics.

Smudge repellent

Your lenses are made of plastic rather than glass. Plastic, as a material, is rough and so can hold oil from your body. You wouldn’t believe how often you touch your own face, hair and in turn your glasses throughout the day. Each time your lenses are touched you can smudge your lenses with the oils from your hands. Did you know eyelashes have small amounts of oil on them and the human eye blinks an average 16 times a minute? If you are blessed with naturally long eyelashes they can, from time to time, touch the inside of your lenses smudging them. Your optician however will be able to professionally fit your spectacles to prevent this.

There are lens enhancements, such as Crizal, available that include an oleophobic layer to repel smudges from your lenses making it much easier for you to clean your lenses and keep them clear throughout the day.

Scratch resistant

As mentioned before your lenses are plastic and plastic is a soft material. By looking after your glasses, keeping them in their case when you’re not using them or never putting them lens down on your table can minimalise any chances of scratching your lenses. Daily life can sometimes be a challenge and can result in you scratching your lenses. Crizal lens enhancements include a strengthened surface to increase the durability of the lens, making it resistant to scratches.

Water repellent

We’re faced with changing weather and more than likely you’ll be caught out more than once in a rain shower. Water can stick to lenses making it difficult to see clearly. For better comfort and transparency look for a lens enhancement that offers water repellency to minimalise water adherence. A hydrophobic layer is part of Crizal ensuring your vision isn’t compromised.

Dust repellent

Increase the transparency of your lens for clear vision with a dust repellent lens enhancement. The anti-static properties included in Crizal is inspired by space technology and results in dust repellency, ensuring your glasses are your daily ally.

Cleaning your lenses

A lens enhancement with smudge resistancy, water, dust and smudge repllency means your lenses need less cleaning. It’s important to regularly clean your lenses with a microfibre lens cloth and for a more deeper clean use a lens solution recommended to you by your optician.  Talk to your optician today to discuss lens enhancements.

In vitro experiments conducted by Essilor and Paris Vision Institute, Retinal Pigment Epithelium cells were exposed to Blue-Violet light, reproducing the physiological exposure to sunlight of the 40-year-old human eye.
