New Year's resolutions to promote good eyesight

With 2019 drawing to a close and the fresh start of a new year only around the corner, you might be thinking about your New Year’s resolutions. Your health should always be at the top of your priority list, and with 2020 nearly here, it’s important to create new habits that will promote good health.

Looking after your health should include your eyesight, which can be overlooked very easily. You brush your teeth twice daily, think about your food intake and exercise, so why not give your eyes the same courtesy?

With that in mind, here is some inspiration for New Year’s resolutions to promote good eyesight and ensure your eyes remain healthy.

Book an eye examination

It is generally recommended that you visit an optician for an eye examination every 2 years. Depending on your family history or personal health, you may be required to visit more often.

If you haven’t been for an eye examination in a while, or you can’t remember when your last one was, make your number one resolution to book an appointment. A routine eye examination can help to pick up on any changes in your vision and overall health; in some cases, it can be life-saving.

Make sure your optician has an up-to-date record of your eye health by visiting them in 2020.

Follow a healthy diet

A healthy diet is a popular New Year’s resolution as many look towards being healthier after the indulgent Christmas period. It’s important to eat a balanced diet, not just for your overall health but also to promote good eyesight.

Your eyes need a sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals in order to function properly. In extreme cases, a poor diet can contribute to vision loss. In particular, vitamins A, C and E along with omega-3 can help to keep your eyes healthy.

Selection of food that promotes good eye health

Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also have a negative impact on your vision and may increase your risk of eye diseases like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Consider quitting smoking and cutting back on alcohol intake and reap the benefits of your health.

Learn about the common eye conditions

Awareness can sometimes be a huge advantage to staying healthy. Take some time in 2020 to educate yourself on the common eye conditions, including the signs, symptoms and causes. This can help you to recognise any changes in your vision; the earlier an eye condition is detected, the better chance you have of prevention or management.

You should also be familiar with your family’s health history. Conditions such as glaucoma can be hereditary and could put you at higher risk.

If you notice a change in your vision or your eye’s appearance, see an optician to get professional advice and treatment.
