From 23rd to 29th September this year, National Eye Health Week will be taking place across the UK. The week-long initiative has been created to remind everyone just how important it is to look after your eyes, no matter what age you are.

Sight is the sense that people often regard as the most important as it offers a sense of independence and freedom. There are many simple things you can do to promote healthy vision and ensure your eyes remain in good working condition.

The sense of sight is important for everyday life

There are approximately 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss that is significant enough to impact their daily lives. Yet around half of this sight loss could be avoidable through the right diagnosis and treatment.

At Essilor, we’ll be taking you through some top tips and advice on eye health through our social channels during National Eye Health Week.

Making the most of your vision

Your eyes are a fascinating part of your body, allowing you to see the world around you. Factors such as age, lifestyle choices and medical history can have an impact on your vision. It’s important to understand what can affect your eye health and what you can do to prevent it.

Most eye conditions can be treated effectively if detected early, so knowing what symptoms to look out for can be incredibly important.

Even just by attending regular eye examinations, you’re giving your eyes the best possible chance of remaining healthy and in good working condition. During a routine eye examination, your optician can detect early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Looking after your eyes is just as important whether you are 5 years old, 15 or 50.

How you can look after your eyes

It is crucial that you understand the different ways you can take care of your eye health. This can include understanding the symptoms of common eye conditions; if spotted early enough, diagnosis and treatment can be much easier. It is also helpful to understand how your lifestyle can impact your vision. Smoking, excessive alcohol and a poor diet can all increase your risk of eye health problems.
