Choosing the best lenses for sport

It’s important to be able to see clearly when taking part in your favourite activities, including playing sport. Sharp, clear vision can have a huge impact on your ability to play, whether it’s golf, cycling, tennis or skiing! If you struggle with your vision, you might benefit from wearing lenses for sport.

Having optimal vision when playing sport can improve your confidence and ability,  and it could even reduce the risk of accidents or injury, to both yourself and others around you. You shouldn’t have to give up your hobby due to poor vision; instead, we have some helpful solutions to help improve your vision so that you can play sport comfortably.

Wearing lenses for sport

If you suffer from a refractive error such as myopia, astigmatism or presbyopia, you will benefit from wearing corrective lenses. It’s important that you wear them when playing sport too, as it will make the experience much easier and more comfortable.

Squinting to see the ball or trying to see what’s ahead may result in eye fatigue, which can lead to headaches or dry eyes. If you often experience this, you should visit your local optician for an eye examination to see if you have a prescription and require corrective lenses.

Wearing lenses for sport might even make you a better player; although we can’t guarantee this! However, clearer vision will make it much easier to focus on other players and your environment.

Go karting

You may need single vision or varifocal lenses depending on your individual needs. For example, do you have trouble seeing different distances when playing tennis? Or do you struggle to see into the distance when behind the wheel of a go kart? Wearing the right lenses for sport can help to make your job much more comfortable.

Corrective lenses for sport

If you suffer from presbyopia you’ll need a lens that corrects your distance vision and your near vision. Varifocal lenses are the perfect solution for helping you to see clearly at different distances; near, far and everything in between. Varilux X series is the best Varilux varifocal lens for sharpness and fluid vision when looking at something close to something far away, perfect for when you’re following the shuttlecock on the court.

Single vision lenses have just one prescription power across the whole lens.  Eyezen single vision lenses deliver sharper vision giving you more clarity when you’re on the track or road.

Lens solutions for playing sport outdoors

If your hobbies often involve playing sport outdoors, you will likely experience bright light and glare from the sun, making it difficult for you to see clearly. Whether you suffer from glare, or you’re looking to protect your vision from UV light while you play, there are specific lens solutions that can help.

Polarised lenses are specifically designed to reduce glare, by filtering out the bright horizontal light that bounces off flat surfaces. Polarised lenses can also offer a high level of UV protection, which means you can play sport safely.

Similarly, if you’re often on the go and find yourself going from inside to outside, or vice versa, you may benefit from wearing photochromic lenses. Photochromic lenses will adapt automatically to changing light conditions, so your eyes don’t have to work as hard.

Eye Protect System is embedded into Essilor corrective lenses to protect your vision from UV and harmful light. Even if it’s not sunny outside, you can still be vulnerable to UV light. Eye Protect System can offer efficient protection in your everyday lenses.
